Academics
Shanghai Jiao Tong University always adheres to its fine traditions of laying
emphasis on the development of its faculty. In the light of this tradition, the build-up of
qualified faculty has been on the prior list of its strategic development plan. Practical
measures have been adopted to streamline the organizational structure and improve
the overall quality of its faculty. Shanghai Jiao Tong University boasts not only
conscientious, diligent senior professors with profound academic accomplishments,
but also a number of innovative youth-middle aged academic leaders who stand on
the front edge of the discipline together with those outstanding and energetic young
teachers.

















Till the end of 2004, the faculty number of SJTU has amounted to more than 2800,
with 635 professors, 891 associate professors, of which 15 are members of Chinese
Academy of Sciences, 20 are members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 568
are PhD supervisors. A good number of young teachers of talents also emerge,
among whom there are 31 specially-employed professors of the "Cheung Kong
Scholars Program ", 33 obtainers of the Training Funds for Excellent Persons
sponsored by the Ministry of Education, and 11 awardees of the Award of University
Teachers. And 50% of the faculty in SJTU has a Doctor's degree.

The excellent representatives of these young talents are as follows: Ni Jun, an expert
in machinery and automation, is one of the first specially-employed professors of the
"Cheung Kong Scholars Program ". He has been awarded "American State Superior
Young Machinery Engineer Reward" and "American President Professor Reward" and
is a professor in charge of "Wu Xianming Machinery Research Center" in Michigan
University and "Industry and Studies Joint Research Center". Professor Zhang
Wenjun is the general team leader of the National HDTV Project.











He is one of the first group Cheung Kong Scholars in Shanghai Jiao tong University
and has been awarded the 2000 May Fourth Youth Medal. professor Ding Wenjiang,
the winner of the national May First Labor's Medal in 1999 and the National Advanced
Worker in 2000, has successfully applied for the establishment of Light Alloy Net
Forming Engineering Research Center during the Ninth Five-year Plan Period and
has been dean of the center ever since. Professor He Lin is the first Chinese who has
been conferred the Excellent Researcher of 2001 by NARSAD. Being the obtainer of
the National Outstanding Youth Fund and the specially-employed professor of the
"Cheung Kong Scholars Program ", Professor Mao Junfa does research on high
speed and microwave IC and electrical characteristics of interconnection and
Package. Professor Huang Zhen is one of the specially-employed professors of the
"Cheung Kong Scholars Program" and the winner of the Training Funds for Excellent
Persons sponsored by the Ministry of Education. He has greatly contributed to the
engine combustion and exhausting control, measurement of the laser flow field and
air pollution control.
